Instruction
We need to form 5 or 6 people in a group, then select a culture that we are interested. Then do research about the topic we have decided on and create an artwork as the outcome for submission.
Lecture
Topic 1/Design Sensitivities
Design sensitivity is the ability to show an understanding of culture and market from the designer. Understand who was the product or designs serving then make specific adjustments about it, to make sure the artwork does not show offensive or cause misunderstanding around the culture. It was an important and needed skill in this era, information gets viral easily on the internet. Make sure that there are no misleading elements in the work, such as language differences, gestures, symbols, etc., which will be perceived differently by different cultures.
Progression
Grouping
It has mentioned some rules about forming a group. It can't have over 3 people from the same semester in each group and the students that are going to Osaka, Japan will form a group by themself. I am not going to Japan, so I form a group with my friend and some new students. We have 6 group members, which is me, Simon, Vincent, Amelee, Angel, and Mychelle.
Meeting
We start our first meeting after we form a group. At this meeting, we start with a minor ice breaking, understanding each other's name and studying courses and which semester are we at. Then we talked about the theme culture we were going to select, given some ideas, but in the end, we selected the "Batik Culture".
Then we had our second meeting on Monday(19.02.2024), in this meeting we defined our task and decided on a more specific topic which is Indonesia Batik. Then we have set our S.O.P. to make sure we are on the right track during the process. Our task now is to define our goals do research come out with some ideas, and then write a rationale and make a presentation video for proposing.
Sketch
We sketch our own ideas and write a short introduction for them. My idea is to make a wallpaper using Batik texture, so it can let our house have some traditional and vintage vibes. And did someone do that according to article from ADpro. Leonora Hamill a designer added the Batik elements to her own house design, but she apply the elements on the couch cover and the curtains. So base the what she do with her house, I come out with a rough sketch about my wallpaper.

Proposal Slide
For the proposal slide, we are going to do it individually, do our own research, and come up with our own idea, then we have a meeting to combine them all and turn it into a proposal video. Me, Vincent, and Simon handled the proposal video, then the others should be handling the presentation slide, but they didn't finish on time, so we spent some time finishing the rest.

Data Collection
After meeting with our supervisor, Ms. Maria, we started our data collection phase. We selected two methods for collecting these data, first, we went to the fabric museum in Kuala Lumpur to study the history of batik and its influences in Malay culture.

Next, we continue or study online. Everybody, each of us focuses on each part, Simon focuses on the material and technique, and I focus on the symbols and colors chosen.

Final design (Soft copy)
Our idea is to make a book cover with batik texture.
Following this idea, we were asked a few times to have a meeting to finalize it but we didn't get any responses, so, Simon, Vincent and I decided to use the colors and symbols that represent knowledge in Indonesian culture. We chose, an iris flower and blue color to work with, then we told the team our thoughts, they agreed that the three of us would handle the soft copy for the design as a sample for them to create a physical artwork.
Final Design (Artwork)
Then Mychelle and Angel will handle the final artwork, they make some decoration on the design to make it doesn't look that flat. They sew the texture on the fabric and then turn it into a bookcase.

Reflection
I think communication is very important, our group did a terrible job of that, we kept communication to a minimum, and we were not transparent about the progress of each other's work, which added a big challenge to our collaboration, but fortunately it didn't prevent us from completing the course. In the early days, we were extremely confused, because the teaching provided by the lecturers was very one-sided, vague and arbitrary, and rarely provided useful learning materials, we could only rely on ourselves to find our direction on the Internet and in books, but we didn't know if our answers were up to the mark, which brought unnecessary anxiety to all of us, but our group didn't care much about it, and we didn't expect any useful guidance and help at the beginning. Because we have several group members who have been studying for more than two semesters, and I am one of them, the inability to get useful guidance from the instructor is also a conclusion that our experience tells us. Overall, our group has a clear division of labor and goals at each stage, but we rarely work together on the execution side, and often people don't finish their work or just lose track, resulting in others needing to finish for them, but luckily this doesn't stop us from completing our work by the deadline we set ourselves. In conclusion, I have learned that team communication is important, and thinking is often more useful than waiting, and there is no need to expect too much from the high-quality lessons and guidance that the instructor will give, and you need to prepare yourself in advance to leave a way forward, and find a way to learn.
