Lecture
Topic 3/Repetition and Movement
We explore the integral concepts of repetition and movement, in this lecture.
Repetition, the art of incorporating elements in regular or cyclic patterns,
enhances design by establishing consistency and rhythm, whether through
regular, alternating, flowing, random, or progressive sequences. The
introduction of variation within repetition elevates interest and complexity.
Moving on to Movement, it constitutes the visual flow through a composition,
either implied by static elements suggesting motion or through real, dynamic
components. Elements like lines, diagonals, and placement play a pivotal role
in guiding the viewer's eye, creating a sense of movement within a still
image. As a student, grasping these principles will not only deepen your
understanding of design but also empower you to craft visually compelling and
engaging compositions. Experiment with repetition for cohesion and movement
for dynamism to take your design skills to new heights.
Topic 4/Harmony and Unity
In the realm of design, the principles of Harmony and Unity serve as linchpins
for creating visually compelling and cohesive compositions. Harmony, achieved
through the integration of similar or related elements like adjacent colors
and shapes, establishes a logical relationship, connection, alignment, or
progression among these components. These harmonious elements work
collaboratively, complementing each other to forge a seamless visual
experience. Unity, on the other hand, emerges from the strategic application
of harmonious similarity, repetition, continuance, proximity, and alignment.
It involves the skillful visual linking of various elements within the work,
allowing disparate components and principles to coalesce into a unified whole
that transcends the individual parts. The synthesis of Harmony and Unity not
only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the design but also elevates it to a
level where the amalgamation becomes greater than the sum of its distinctive
elements.
Topic 5/Symbol, Words and Image
In today's lecture, we delved into the fundamental aspects of design
principles, symbol words, and imagery, essential elements for any aspiring
designer. We explored how elements like repetition and movement can bring life
and dynamism to visual compositions, creating a rhythm that captivates the
viewer. Harmony and unity emerged as key players, weaving together similar and
related elements into a cohesive whole that transcends the sum of its parts.
We also discussed the powerful impact of symbol words and imagery in design,
recognizing their ability to convey meaning and evoke emotions. As students
aspiring to master the art of design, understanding and applying these
principles not only enhance our creative endeavors but also contribute to the
effectiveness of our visual communication. So, let's continue to explore,
experiment, and refine our skills, embracing the exciting journey of bringing
ideas to life through the language of design.

In this task, we are going to choose an artwork that is related to the SDGs
goals we have chosen and analyze their design principles and how they work.
Then, we came out with our own design that was inspired by studying the
artwork we had chosen.
Visual Analysis
First, I studied the SDGs goal, and I decided to choose a goal that was more
related to our country. So, I am going to choose between Goal 13 and Goal 14,
which is about climate and the ocean, so seen that it was raining when I was
finding the information about these goals, and flood and unusual rain was
viral climate problem in our country, I decided to choose artworks relate to
SDGs goals No.13
'Climate Action', it's better to show flood.
Title: SELVA
Artist: Arthus Pilorget
Date: 30.06.2018
The artwork "SELVA" was created by concept artist Arthus Pilorget. It is part
of a larger project in which the artist is producing animations based on his
artworks. However, the specific piece I have chosen is the illustrated
version. The reason I chose this artwork is because when I was searching for
these artworks, a lot of them used blue color tones, but this used green color
tones, so it caught my eye when I was scrolling through the gallery website.
Then I think it was quite relative to the Climate Action goal, it shows a city
view after abandonment with the flood, which will let us notice that this is
what will happen if the climate keeps getting worse. There are some cities
mentioned that will face a risk of abandonment cause of an unusual climate
atmosphere, such as Tokyo, Venice, etc. So, I think this artwork is relative
to the goal.
Observation
"SELVA" is presented in a portrait orientation. The artwork uses green color
tones to bring out the natural atmosphere. However, at the bottom right of the
painting, the color shifts to a purplish and teal hue. In this painting, the
artist uses a lot of color blocks rather than continuous lines to show the
details and the shadows of the painting. The composition doesn't misdirect me
when I look at this painting, I can focus on the boat in the middle.

Analysis
"SELVA" by Arthus Pilorget employs some design principles, to create a
complete visual narrative.
Minimizing the use of distinct lines and using
the color blocks on the details and shadow rather than using a continuous line
make the line and the color fusion seamlessly in the painting it shows the
principle of unity. Then the color shift of the bottom right part of the
painting shows the principle of harmony, shifting the color from green tones
to purplish and teal hue, making the painting not feel boring while the
painting looks harmonious. The artist employs the interplay of light and
shadow of the building around the boat, guiding the viewer's gaze to focus on
the boat, and showing his perspective skills.
Interpretation
"SELVA" shows an expression of the moment when nature took over an abandoned
town, the natural atmosphere will inspire the viewer to think about their role
in the natural world. The application of principles in the details of the
painting enhanced the dilapidation of the towns, but the shadows and lights
don't overly convey a negative sentiment in this painting. Following the
guides of the artist, our gaze will focus on the characters in the boat, the
characters look smaller compared to the buildings and plants or other objects
in this painting when they see that nature has taken over the abandoned city,
their surprised expression and their size in the painting reminds me that
human is actually a small existing in front of nature. In conclusion, "SELVA"
provides complex emotions and invites viewer to reflect on their role on the
planet, the artwork shows the intertwined complex themes of nature, urban
decay, life, and ruins, and it provides a decent emphasizing emotional
engagement.
Own Design
Visual Reference
I'm going to find some game art or illustrations to use as a sample for my
reference. They all show a flooded city or other scenarios related to the
SDGs goals.
Idea Sketch
I already had a few ideas when I chose the SDGs goal.
|
| Idea 1 |
The first idea was a kid and an animal on a boat drifting over a flooded
city.
|
| Idea 2 |
Idea 2 shows a flooded and dilapidated city from an overhead view.
|
| Idea 3 |
Idea 3 children playing on the flooded building roof.
|
| Idea 4 |
Idea 4 was a people standing on a roof and watching the town gradually
submerged by water.
|
| Idea 5 |
Idea 5 was a person praying under the Torii to hope the unusual weather could be stopped.
|
| Idea 6 |
Idea 6 was a person playing piano inside a flooded room.
Progression
|
| Progression_1 |
First, I sketch a rough line art to having a mindset of the composition.
|
| Progression_2 |
Then I draw the actual line art, then decided to continue with the coloring.
|
| Progression_3 |
I finished the coloring of the background, and I decided to go about the
blue color tone.
|
| Progression_4 |
Then, I finished color of the building, using the gray color tone with some
blue, then for the tower, I decided to use red color for the coloring. For
the tower that far away, I decided to use the contrast principles.
|
| Progression_5 |
Then I finished the coloring of Torri and the girl.
|
| Progression_6 |
After that, I decided to switch the girl in the middle.
|
| Progression_7 |
Then I worked on the details on the background using the same color tone as
the background. Then I added a text in the middle.
|
| Progression_8 |
After the feedback section, I removed the text and worked on the details of
the building.
Submission
Title: Drowning hope
Statement: In this artwork, a deserted city, forsaken by its
inhabitants who sought refuge in an uncertain future, reflects principles of
harmony and unity in the backdrop. A red tower stands in stark contrast,
emphasizing the comparison between the abandoned and the burgeoning city. A
girl on a Torii symbolizes the strength of faith in times of hopelessness,
underscoring the divergence of responses to disaster—some abandon, while
others cling to their beliefs. The artwork invites contemplation on the
resilience of religion and prompts consideration of alternative approaches to
confronting adversity in a world without abandonment.

Reflection
Organizing the artwork meticulously was an essential step that required constant awareness throughout the progression. Conducting a thorough visual study at the outset proved to be a crucial phase, leaving a significant impact on the final outcome and providing a clear mindset about the artwork. Lastly, after completing each step, it is imperative to carefully examine the next one, allowing the progression to unfold methodically without rushing. Hastiness can adversely affect the quality of the outcomes.
Feedback
Week11
The reasons for choosing the artworks must be clearer and more relative to the
SDGs goal. Too much emotional expression in the observation and analysis phase
left it to the interpretation phase. In the analysis phase, it should be more
focused on the design principles of the artworks.
Week12
Still need to make some corrections to the analysis and observation phase.
Discussion said that going with idea 4 and idea 5 will work and mentioned that
try to explore more possibilities between ideas.
Week14
Removing the text will be a better choice, if want to keep the text, move it into the building at the left and add some building at the right, to balance the composition.
