Progression and Lecture
Week01/Modules briefing and pass example showcase
In this week’s lecture, we got a brief overview of the module and the assignment. Basically, we’ll be working across multiple areas of art in games, but the key focus of this module is observation and research. We also got a rundown of how the course will be structured moving forward.
Week02/Art analyzing
This week, we covered a lecture on how to analyze art direction. Some examples were shown, and key concepts were introduced, such as genre, style, and theme. We also learned some methods for analyzing art direction, including the use of a positioning map.
- Genre refers to the type of game, such as arcade, turn-based, or strategy.
- Style refers to the visual elements, including color schemes, rendering techniques, and line work.
- Theme is more about the game’s content or narrative, which can also influence the overall style.
We also played the game Among Us together as a case study for analysis. Three main aspects were emphasized:
- Must-have elements – Core features that are essential for the game to function properly.
- Good-to-have elements – Features that enhance the experience and make the game more engaging.
- Nice-to-have elements – Optional features that aren’t necessary but add a pleasant touch to the game.
Our seniors’ past works were shown to us as examples, demonstrating how to effectively analyze art direction and visual style.
Then, we were briefed on the project requirements. We need to analyze the game Among Us using the three categories: must-have, good-to-have, and nice-to-have features. After that, we should list out the pros and cons of the game. Next, we are required to choose another game and apply the same analysis method to it.
Exercise 1/Game Analyze
Week02/Analyze and comparison
We need to analyze the game Among Us based on the key points discussed in the lectures and compare it with a game of our choice. I was responsible for evaluating the "good-to-have" features of Among Us.
